What to Wear to My Photo Shoot?

What to Wear?

For a family photo shoot, I often get asked "what should we wear"?  It's probably one of the most stressful things that a family has to deal with when scheduling their photo shoot.  First things first, if you are going to be hanging up your portraits in your family room, take a look around and see what colors would look great as an accent and start from there.

There are a few ways to go about getting a coordinated look together.

1.    Choose clothing for one family member first, like easiest person to dress or if you have a particular piece of clothing you really want in the photos.  You could start with a multicolored dress and then take colors out of the dress and coordinate those colors with other family members.  This works very well.

2. Pick a color theme like neutral, neutral, colorful or deep rich tones.

  • Neutral would include grays, black, browns, creams, etc.
  • Colorful would have a base of neutral with a bold, colorful scarf, tie, necklace or hair bow.
  • Deep rich tones are always great in Autumn but can work any other time as well.  These colors include burnt orange, deep reds, navy and purple.

Other Tips:

Add accessories! Accessories can make an outfit.  Add headbands, a cool belt or wear a necklace and complements the outfit.

DO layers! Put a polo shirt under the little guys plaid shirt. Bring a denim jacket to wear over the dress. A cute Pea Coat with matching heels is so adorable! Switching out layers changes up the look and feel of the photos.

Stick with long pants and not shorts (unless you're going for a very summery look in the photos).  Long pants always look better in photos.  Shorts tend to be distracting.

As always, feel free to run by your outfit with me prior to the photo shoot.  I can always help with suggestions. If you'd like to find out more information about how Stacey Markel Photography can capture your memories, stop on over to the About Stacey Markel Photography section to learn more about me and to see if I'd be a great fit.
